Minnesota Gopher Football Hires Jerry Kill

Posted: December 6, 2010 in News

The title just flows off of your lips doesn’t it?

You can’t make this stuff up. For those of you who don’t know who Jerry Kill is, he is the former head coach of Northern Illinois. The same team that was favored by 17.5 points to win the MAC and lost to Miami Ohio. Oh sure he led the Huskies to records of 6-7, 7-6, and 10-3, but this is hardly the type of hire that is going to motivate your alumni to donate, or your students and fans to buy tickets.

I think it’s a safe assumption that the season ticket base will start to shrink. Joel Maturi had to get a brand name coach like Shannon, Fullmer, or Leach. If you thought the fan base eroded during the season, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The saving grace will be Husker fans that want to see their club every other year buying them up for one game semi-annually. For the rest of the games they will be disguised at seats or giving tickets away.

I’m trying to see this from Maturi and the University’s standpoint. Was this an effort to save money? Are they on the hook for too much money to Tim Brewster? The question that keeps begging to be asked is why build a new stadium and populate it with the likes of Brewster and Jerry Kill? The Big 10 just realigned their conference to give you a shot 1 in 6 shot at winning one half of the conference and get into a Big 10 Championship. It was the perfect chance to bring in a coach that would motivate recruits and your fans.

When Sid Hartmann’s first column about the new leader is, “Give Kill a Chance” you know even the most senile Gopher rube on the planet questions this decision, indirectly. If this was such a great hire, why announce it on Sunday why everyone is watching the Vikings and the NFL? It’s classic! You think we wouldn’t notice?

I for one am on rivals.com pounding the refresh button to watch all of the three star recruits de-commit and the current players transfer.
